Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it

There are so many places I want to see. So many cultures and civilisations I want to experience. The whole world, if I could ever be so lucky. But everybody has a place they think of when people ask them about their home. For me, that place is Lake Rudyard. It’s a place I love to go walking, come rain or shine. It’s so familiar and yet so different every time I visit.

I’ve photographed it throughout the changing seasons, but one thing stays the same. The everlasting, tranquil beauty and a great poet’s famous name.

Rudyard Kipling’s parents courted each other at the lake. They loved it so much that they lent the name to their first-born child. I’ve looked over some of my photographs of the lake and its surroundings, so I can share them with you. It may not be one of the great wonders of the world, but it’s home.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And — which is more — you’ll be a Man, my son!

  1. My Granddad’s favourite poem. “If you can fill the unforgiving minute…” – always fills me with guilt! : ) Beautiful photographs of a very lovely part of the world.
