Everybody is busy these days. Always in a rush. Never pausing unnecessarily, taking a moment to look around. Loitering has become a dirty word.
I sometimes like to sit in a coffee shop and watch the world go by. I don’t know if it’s in my nature because I’m a photographer, or because I don’t feel the increasing need for urgency that’s all around us. I like to take the different route, not the quickest. I like to make the mundane an adventure. I know it’s been said many times before (in the famous poem Leisure by William Henry Davies for one), but it’s a sentiment I share.
I hope the next time you rush past a familiar place you pause, if only for a moment, and see what you’ve not yet seen. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a different route. Get lost and take photos of what you’ve found. Most importantly, take time. We don’t get enough of it.
